Topps to release series of NFT baseball cards
The tokens will be launched on the Avalanche network and are being released to celebrate baseball’s rising stars
The tokens will feature the classic Topps card design used by the physical collection alongside motion animations, facsimile signatures and digital relic content that “showcases MLB rookies, emerging stars, veteran mainstays”.
The release of the NFT collection will take place on ToppsNFTs.com – a recently-launched platform powered by Avalanche. According to the announcement, the platform “removes the need for special wallets” and provides baseball fans with a “single location to buy, sell and explore officially licensed Topps NFT collections”.
Topps has offered baseball fans digital collectables through its mobile app since 2012 and already has an existing NFT platform, toppsmlb.com.
Tobin Lent, VP & Global General Manager of Topps, hopes that this iteration will appeal to a broader audience and help celebrate the rising talent that competes in the MLB.
“Our vision is to create a fun, easy-to-use collecting experience on the blockchain that appeals to all fans whether they have experience with NFTs or not,” he said.
“It’s an extension of the vision we’ve had for digital collectibles in our mobile apps since 2012.
“The release of the 2021 Topps MLB Inception NFT Collection celebrates promising young talent and notable rising stars already making a name for themselves in professional baseball, and symbolises the continued growth of this new era of Topps digital collecting.”
The initial launch of the NFT collection features Standard and Premium Packs, which include card rarities ranging from Common to Legendary. The packs will be available to buy exclusively on ToppsNFTs.com from Thursday September 9 at 1pm ET.
